Performing Arts
We love live performance!
Manchester has a deep heritage in the performing arts. Music, dance, theatre, opera: our city offers everything from brand new musicals to award winning plays to the very best music.
Venues steeped in history such as the Palace, Opera House and the Royal Exchange are now complemented by the modern acoustically-designed Bridgewater Hall ,The Lowry which has the largest stage in the UK outside of London and HOME with its blend of intimate performing and socialising spaces. The Manchester Arena provides the largest indoor capacity in the country: 21,000 seats (which makes Micheal Bublé’s a Capella performance pretty mind-blowing).

As well as professional performers, Manchester is home to over a hundred amateur groups performing in their local communities. For some, just participating is motivation enough. For others, it will hopefully be a path to a professional career: following in the footsteps of Maxine Peake and Ben Kingsley. Or Lamaar Manning – who started out dancing on the tables of the Beehive in Moss Side and ended up at Lollapalooza in front of 200,000 people.
Performing Arts Physiotherapy: Injury Treatment
There is no question that those part of the performing arts industry are elite level athletes! That’s right, they might be smiling and performing with a limitless amount of energy to entertain us all but make no mistake; the stresses and strains placed on the body of a performer are no different from those who play professional football or slide around a tennis court. In some cases, much more! Injuries can range from Achilles tendinopathies to ACL tears and low back pain.
The physio’s job is to diagnose your injury, provide treatment, and most importantly put in place a plan to help minimise the risk of an injury in the future. This could be a small tweak to your warmup routine or advice on strengthening exercises you might not have previously considered.
Performing Arts Physiotherapy: Injury Prevention
Prevention is key, although this is easier said than done! To help sustain a long and healthy career in performing arts, it is vital you address a problem before it arises or as soon you feel something is not quite right.
You may benefit from having in place a program focussing on strength and mobility. These need specific to your body and the demands you are placing on it. . A physio familiar with those in the performing arts can help you and your team incorporate the most effective exercises and drills to help you stay injury free.
Performing Arts Injury: The Mental Challenges
The performing arts is a highly competitive industry. It can be tough enough recovering from an injury in the first place, but there is also the added stress of losing your role or not being available for future shows.
A consideration in selecting a physiotherapist is their ability not simply to treat your injury but also help you deal with the emotional components in play. So it is important to find a physio who will take the time to listen and understand. Because ultimately you need confidence that you that you can recover and that you are on the right pathway to do it.
